Sash windows restoration in Hammersmith
Sash window restoration project in Hammersmith, where our team restored 16 Georgian-style wooden sash windows in a period property.
Most of the windows consist of six-over-six glass panes, or “lights,” separated by slender crossbars.
When we arrived on site, the window was in poor condition with extensive wood rot along the bottom rail and sides, peeling paint, and degraded glazing putty.
Restoration process
We started with a thorough assessment of the window to identify all areas of concern. The primary issues were rotting wood, weakened joints, deteriorating putty, and peeling paint.
We carefully removed all rotten sections of the window frame. We replaced the decayed wood with high-quality treated timber that matched the original profile, creating a seamless blend with the existing structure. Then, we strengthened the frame by filling minor gaps with epoxy resin. We used adhesive and dowels to attach the new sections, making the window strong and secure again.
After the structural repairs were completed, we sanded the entire frame to remove any imperfections and prepare it for painting. The window was primed and then painted with two coats of weather-resistant bright white paint.
In the end, we installed draught-proofing strips around the window frame to further improve energy efficiency. These strips were fitted along the rails and around the perimeter of the frame to ensure a tight seal.
Project results
The transformation was truly remarkable. The window which was previously a source of energy loss and an eyesore due to decay, has been restored to its original beauty.
