Bay window restoration in Thames Ditton
At Surrey Sash Window Specialists, we recently completed a bay window restoration in Thames Ditton, where we restored the original bay casement windows.
These windows were designed in the classic Edwardian style with decorative horns, slender glazing bars, and intricate mouldings that highlight the architectural elegance of the period.
The windows were in poor condition, with significant wood rot and outdated single glazing, resulting in poor thermal efficiency and noise insulation.
Restoration process
Initial assessment: Our team began with a careful assessment of each casement window to determine the extent of the damage.
We noted significant areas of rot, especially in the lower rails and sills, which are most exposed to weather. The paint was peeling, and the joints were loose.
Timber repair: We removed all damaged wood sections and spliced them in new, high-quality timber that matched the original profile.
To strengthen the joints and prevent future deterioration, we used a combination of adhesive and dowels, ensuring a secure bond. In areas of minor decay, we applied epoxy resin to fill gaps and strengthen the timber.
Double glazing upgrade: The old single glazing was carefully removed, and we installed double-glazed 12 mm glass units with a black spacer.
We also applied new putty around the glazing bars, ensuring a weathertight seal that prevents draughts and moisture access.
Finishing touches: Once the repairs and glazing were complete, we sanded all the frames to create a smooth surface for painting.
The windows were then primed and painted with two coats of high quality weather resistant paint in a classic white finish.
We also fitted new draught-proofing strips to enhance the thermal performance and reduce noise infiltration.
Results of the project
We successfully restored the windows to their original charm significantly improving their thermal performance.
The client was delighted with the increased comfort and noticeable reduction in noise levels.
